The refurbishing process involves cleaning the drives laser and getting all the dust out of the system then the thermal paste can be replaced which helps keep the system running cool which is what computers need for optimal performance. The thermal paste getting old is why the 3 red light problem occurs which is why it is always good to have either an external fan or better internal cooling heatsinks(something like a little radiator).
